GÜNTER NORIS - BEATLES ALBUM (1969)

To start the month of August, which the old ones said was the month of mad dogs, I present the tribute album "Beatles Album", by German musician Günter Noris, which was released in Germany, in 1969, by the label EMI/Columbia.

Conductor, pianist, arranger and composer Günter M. Noris, actually Günter Maier, was born on June 5, 1935, in Bad Kissingen, Lower Franconian and died on November 27, 2007, in Kerpen, North Rhine, Westphalia.

The son of a postman, he got in touch with music at an early age and learned piano and composition at the Bavarian State Conservatory in Würzburg. He financed his studies as a jazz musician, with performances in American clubs, as a member of the group Hep Cats.

After completing his studies, he continued to perform as a jazz musician with the Helmut Brandt group. In 1961, RIAS hired him as a pianist and assistant conductor for the RIAS Dance Orchestra in Berlin.

In 1966, Hildegard Knef made him the music director for her first tour. At that time he adopted the stage name of "Noris", after the "Villa Noris", in his hometown.

In 1967, he moved to Cologne to work as a pianist and arranger for the WDR Dance Orchestra. In 1968, he followed a successful tour of Japan and in 1970, WDR recorded the musical "Noris Pierre & Madeleine", starring René Kollo and Gitte Haenning.

In 1971, he founded the Big Band of the German Armed Forces, with which he also created the musical support program for the Munich Olympic Games (1972) and the 1974 World Cup in Germany. In 1983, he resigned from the Bundeswehr and founded his own band, the Gala Big Band, which focused on the typical "Noris sound".

From 1977 to 1996, Noris Günter, Hugo Strasser and Max Greger released 20 official dance records of the year for the General German Dance Teachers Association - ADTV. In 1995, ADTV named the Gala Big Band the "Best Dance Orchestra in the World".

Günter Noris performed around 2500 live performances in 15 countries in almost 40 years of his career. Proceeds from many of his concerts went to charity. President Richard Von Weizäcker personally presented him with the Federal Merit Cross.

In 2005, to mark his 70th birthday, former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt and the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Jürgen Rüttgers, honored him.

The following is the list of songs that make up the album of this post:

01. Lady madonna;
02. With a little help from my friends;
03. Bungalow Bill;
04. Ob-la-di, ob-la-da;
05. Penny lane;
06. Hey Jude;
07. Can't buy me love;

ED MACIEL - OS GRANDES SUCESSOS DOS BEATLES (2021)

Last weekend, listening to a compilation by Brazilian musician Ed Maciel, I noticed that he performed several Beatles songs over seven albums. Based on this, I decided to put together a compilation of these songs.

Ed Maciel was born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, on January 21, 1927 and died on August 4, 2011. His best moment in his career occurred precisely in the years 1966 and 1967, when he released the albums of the series “Na Onda ”, on the Odeon record label, which had a dancing rhythm, interpreted radio hit songs and appealed to lovers of instrumental music.

He came from a family of musicians or, more accurately, trombonists. His father and at least two of his brothers continued playing the trombone and his brother Edson, the youngest, participated in recordings of their albums.

With an erudite background, upon arriving in Rio de Janeiro, he became a conductor, arranger, orchestra leader and was the first trombonist of the Symphonic Orchestra of the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro.

Practically, he played with almost all the great names of Música Popular Brasileira. The selection of songs that make up this compilation contains the following songs:

01. Day tripper;
02. A taste of honey;
03. I feel fine;
04. Yesterday;
05. Michelle;
06. Got to get you in my life;
07. Hey Jude;
08. Get back;
09. Goodbye;
10. Let it be;
11. Money.

EXPÓSITO E SUA ORQUESTRA - OS GRANDES SUCESSOS DOS BEATLES (2021)

In June 2020, I posted a single (EP) by the Orquestra Namorados do Caribe containing 4 Beatles hits, which was released in Brazil in 1966 by RCA Victor.

Some time later, checking other Brazilian orchestras, I noticed that several of them also recorded tracks by the quartet The Beatles.

So, I had the idea to select the recordings of these orchestras. To start with, I present six orchestrated songs recorded by the Argentinean conductor Expósito & Sua Orquestra, which were released in Brazil, on several albums, by the record label RCA Victor.

Maestro Virgílio Hugo Expósito was born on May 3, 1924, in the city of Zárate, a province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and died on October 25, 1997.

The musician worked as an arranger and conductor throughout the 1960s, in the orchestras of the Brazilian record company RCA. In Brazil, he left a discography consisting of seven albums, including a Bossa Nova compilation, from 1963 to 1967.

Following are the songs selected for this post:

  • 01. All my loving;
  • 02. Michelle;
  • 03. Help;
  • 04. Here, there and everywhere;
  • 05. Yesterday;
  • 06. A taste of honey.

ERICH KUNZEL & CINCINNATI POPS ORCHESTRA - PERFORM MUSIC OF THE BEATLES (2001)

This time, I present the American conductor Erich Kunzel, the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and the vocal of Kings Singer, in the album "Perform Music Of The Beatles", released in 2001, in the United States, by the record company Telarc.

Conductor and arranger Erich Kunzel Junior was born in New York, on March 21, 1935 and died in Bar Harbor, on September 1, 2009. His first musical graduation took place at Dartmouth College and later at Harvard and Brown University.

From 1960 to 1965, he conducted the Rhode Island Philharmonic and from 1965 to 1977 he was the associate conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

Since 1977, his recordings of popular classical music, by the Telarc record label, have been made, mostly, as director of the Pops Orchestra of Cincinnati. During this period he was the leading conductor of eight popular concerts. He also made innovative jazz recordings and conducted the National Symphony Orchestra on televised concerts.

In 1977, when the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Council created the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, he was appointed its music director. He made a historic and unprecedented feat with his orchestra, to become the first American to perform with an orchestra in China, in October 2005.

In 2006, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts. Practically, a year before he died, in June 2008, he conducted the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

The post's album is a tribute to the Beatles, featuring a selection of songs listed below:

01. Eleanor rigby (Orchestral version);

GEORGE PEHLIVANIAN & THE ARMENIAN ORCHESTRA - BEATLES SYMPHONIC (1993)

Today's post brings an unknown tribute to the Beatles, released in Brazil by the label Kives, entitled "Beatles Symphonic".

The disc contains some interesting reinterpretations, valid for anyone who is passionate about the Beatles and / or tributes and curious people like me.

What harms the work is the attitude of the label when launching, not having the ability to quote the year of release and no information about the interpreters (s) of the songs contained on the disc and their respective musicians. It is unfortunate.

However, an anonymous friend of the blog helped us by informing that the interpreter of this is a tribute is George Pehlivanian & The Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra. I take this opportunity and thank you very much for the kindness of the information.

The Beatles' song selection for this album consists of the following tracks:

01. Penny Lane;
02. Hey Jude;
03. Please please me;
04. Yesterday;
05. Eleanor rigby;
06. A hard day's night;
07. Michele;
08. Lady madonna;
09. Day tripper;
10. Get back;
11. Something;
12. I feel me;
13. Don't let me down;
14. Help;
15. Magical mistery tour;
16. Love me do;
17. All my loving;
18. Julia;
19. Because;
20. She's woman.

HOOKED ON A BEATLES TRIBUTE - DR. FINK AND MYSTERY BAND - 1992

This album, which apparently first came out in '92, features 6 long medleys of Beatles songs (not performed by the Beatles, of course). The medleys include 5 songs each, except for the last one, which has 6 songs.

The medleys are performed by a group who I've never heard (or seen) tell of anywhere else --- "Dr. Fink And The Mystery Band." This group is (was?) apparently a trio, made up of guys who are also otherwise unfamiliar to me: the vocals are by Damian Paul, the guitars are by James Behringer, and whoever "Dr. Fink" was (or is) plays bass, keyboards and drums.

Someone named Hiram Titus is credited for "additional keyboards on 'The End.'" (I'm not sure if that refers to just the song "The End," or to the entire final medley, which also has that name.) Dr. Fink is also credited with the production of the album. I don't know if this was (or is) a "real" band, or just one that got together to do this album or perhaps was "put together" by someone else to do it. Whatever may be the case, I think this is really a good album.

All of the medleys are over 7 minutes long; 3 of them are about 7-and-a-half minutes, and the others are even at least a little longer (the last one is is about 8-and-a-half minutes!). (I'm going by the timings given with the CD; I don't know if they're exact.).

All but one of the songs "covered" are Lennon/McCartney compositions; the one oddball is George Harrison's "Taxman." The album is apparently more a tribute to the songs of Lennon/McCartney, than really a tribute to the Beatles. In fact, this is as good as admitted on the back cover of the CD --- it says, "1992 begins the fourth decade of music by Lennon and McCartney... We the musicians and vocalists [wasn't there just ONE vocalist?] who created this album have done so with a deep desire to keep their music alive forever.

This is our tribute..." I don't have a problem with a Lennon/McCartney tribute, but I can't figure out why they tossed in one single NON-Lennon/McCartney song. One of the "covers" here strikes me as particularly interesting: "Eleanor Rigby," which closes the third medley, is performed instrumentally (the only cover that is performed that way), and is, I think, the longest cover on the album. I love it; I think it sounds great!.

I have also noticed that, although the songs in the medleys don't appear in the exact order that the original Beatles recordings were released, most of them don't seem too "out of place" around the songs that appear next to them.

Most of the earlier songs (from '62-'64) are in the 1st medley; most of the "middle" ones (from '65-'66) in the 2nd and 3rd (though the 3rd one opens with "Lady Madonna"); the ones from '67 in the 4th; and most of the latest ones in the 5th. The last medley seems to be mostly a ballad-oriented medley, with songs from almost every period.

I'd say that overall, this CD isn't really great, but I still find it to be pretty cool. Whoever the guys in this "mysterious" band were (or are), I think they did a good job!
