KAY WARMER - DANCE TO THE BEATLES (1976)

The German musician Kai Warner was the stage name of Werner Last, born in Bremen, on October 27, 1926 and died on July 9, 1982. He was the brother of conductor James Last and Robert Last (drummer).

Warner took piano lessons from Ernst Weelen and received theoretical instruction from Richard Bulling, a student of Max Reger and Engelbert Humperdinck.

After the war, Werner Last appeared as a trombonist together with his brothers Hans (bassist, later known as James Last) and Robert Last in the music halls of Bremen and in the American clubs in nearby Bremerhaven.

At this time he was discovered by composer and impresario Friedrich Meyer and hired into the newly formed dance orchestra of Radio Bremen. The Last Brothers became known as members of the Last-Becker Ensemble.

Werner Last found his first success as an arranger. After the dissolution of the Bremen dance orchestra in 1948, he played for a while in a 12-piece band, then went to seek his fortune in the USA.

In the US, Warner had to earn a living as a casual worker for several months before being admitted to the New York musicians' union. As a trombonist, he belonged to several renowned big bands. Additionally, he studied music theory at New York University with Schillinger professor Rudolf Schramm.

In 1958, Warner Last returned to Germany and arranged numerous film soundtracks. In 1966 he signed as a producer with Polydor; he discovered and produced Renate Kern.

As Kai Warner, he started his own orchestra, which included many musicians who had played with James Last (such as his brother Robert Last, who had previously played drums on James Last's early sessions).

In 1975, Kai Warner moved from Polydor to Philips. In addition to his LPs such as Pops For Minis, Happy Together, Goldtimer 1 and 2, his name is forever linked to the Go-In series, which later continued at Philips under the name Go-In Party.

Other albums: So In Love, Love Songs, Romantic Songs, Wer recht in Freuden tanzen will, Warner Plays Wagner, Golden Violins, Volkslieder Festival, On The Road To Philadelphia, Swingin' Johann, Salsoul Explosion, A Glass Of Champagne, Dance To The Beatles, Zum Tanz Marsch Marsch, Polka wie noch nie, Oriental Nights, It's Country Time and, of course, the Christmas album Christmas Party.

He also made several recordings with his Kai Warner Singers, a mixed choir made up of six women and six men often accompanied by just a rhythm section, as Ray Conniff often did on his 1970s albums. He died in Hamburg at the age of 55.

BANDA PLASTICA DE TEPETLIXPA MEXICO - ADIOS A LOS BEATLES (1971)

The album "Adios a Los Beatles" is a curious and eccentric album with versions of some of the successes of the famous British group that, according to the legend, was made as a way of saying goodbye to two of the members of the Beatles, from an unconfirmed visit to the Mexico.

According to reports of the time, the Beatles were incognito in Mexico, to know the priestess María Sabina and, thus, the band of Tepetlixpa wanted to pay tribute to them with this album.

Little is known of this imaginary visit of the Beatles to Mexican lands in 1969, to meet Maria Sabina, the most famous shaman of Mexican mysticism where, it is said, they visited her in Oaxaca. Legend has it that Paul and John, at that time, would have traveled to these places ...!

The “Banda Plastica de Tepetlixpa”, was a band formed by some natives of the city of Tepetlixpa, who recorded this album with 10 cover songs. On the cover, you can see the band with a big sign saying goodbye to the British.

Whatever the story, and if this visit really existed, it's a very eccentric album, no doubt. It is a band, in the style of those that also exist in Portugal, usually based in Recreational Associations, Fire Bands or Philharmonic Bands, with a folk and regional sound, based on saxophones, trumpets, trombones and various percussion instruments of the time, but it is still a sincere, honest and poignant tribute by some Mexican musicians, to the most important and famous English group in the music scene.

On this disc you can hear different, colorful and picturesque versions of classics from the British group, such as Yellow submarine, Yesterday, Hey Jude and Eleanor Rigby, marked by brass and percussion instruments.

The disc was released in Mexico in 1971, by the label Caleidofon. The musical selection is composed of the following songs:

01. Ob-la-di, Ob-la da;
02. I want to hold your hand;
03. Carry that weight;
04. Yesterday;
05. Eleanor rigby;
06. Yellow submarine;
07. Hey Jude;
08. Girl;
09. I should have known better;
10. A hard days night.

HELEN MERRIL - SINGS THE BEATLES - 1970

Helen Merrill (born Jelena Ana Milcetic, July 21, 1930) is an American jazz vocalist. Merrill's recording career has spanned six decades. She has recorded and performed with notable jazz musicians.
Merrill was born in New York City in 1930 to Croatian immigrant parents. She began singing in jazz clubs in the Bronx in 1944, aged fourteen. By the time she was sixteen, Merrill had taken up music full-time. In 1952, Merrill made her recording debut when she was asked to sing "A Cigarette For Company" with the Earl Hines Band; the song was released on the D'Oro label, created specifically to record Hines' band with Merrill. Etta Jones was in Hines' band at the time and she too sang on this session, which was reissued on the Xanadu label in 1985. At this time she was married to musician Aaron Sachs. They divorced in 1956.
Merrill was signed by Mercury Records for their new Emarcy label. In 1954, Merrill recorded her first LP, an eponymous record featuring trumpeter Clifford Brown and bassist/cellist Oscar Pettiford, among others. The album was produced and arranged by Quincy Jones, who was then twenty-one years old. The success of Helen Merrill prompted Mercury to sign her for an additional four-album contract.
Merrill's follow-up to Helen Merrill was the 1956 LP, Dream of You, which was produced and arranged by bebop arranger and pianist Gil Evans. Evans' work on Dream of You was his first in many years. His arrangements on Merrill's laid the musical foundations for his work in following years with Miles Davis.
After recording sporadically through the late 1950s and 1960s, Merrill spent much of her time touring Europe, where she enjoyed more commercial success than she had in the United States. She settled for a time in Italy, recording an album there and doing concerts with jazz musicians Piero Umiliani, Chet Baker, Romano Mussolini, and Stan Getz. In 1960 arranger composer Ennio Morricone worked with Helen Merrill on an EP "Helen Merrill sings Italian Songs"on the RCA Italiana label.
Parole e Musica: Words and Music was recorded in Italy with Umiliani's orchestra in the early 1960s while Merrill was living there. The LP features the unusual additions preceding each song, of spoken translations of eloquent Italian word lyrics, complementing the ballads and torch songs.
She returned to the U.S. in the 1960s, but moved to Japan in 1966, staying after touring there and marrying Donald J. Brydon (of United Press International) in April 1967. She developed a following in Japan that remains strong to this day. In addition to recording while in Japan, Merrill became involved in other aspects of the music industry, producing albums for Trio Recordsand hosting a show on a Tokyo radio station.
Merrill returned to the US in 1972 and has continued recording and regular touring since then. Her later career has seen her experiment in different music genres. She has recorded a bossa nova album, a Christmas album and a record's worth of Rodgers and Hammerstein, among many others. Two albums from Merrill's later career have been tributes to past musical partners. In 1987, she and Gil Evans recorded fresh arrangements of their Dream of You; the new recordings were released under the title Collaboration and became the most critically acclaimed of Merrill's albums in the 1980s.
In 1987 she co-produced a CD album, Billy Eckstine Sings with Benny Carter. In 1995 she recorded Brownie: Homage to Clifford Brown as a tribute to the trumpeter. One of her millennium released recordings draws from her Croatian heritage as well as her American upbringing: Jelena Ana Milcetic a.k.a. Helen Merrill (2000). The album combines jazz, pop and blues songs with several traditional Croatian songs sung in Croatian.
Merrill has been married three times, first to musician Aaron Sachs, secondly to UPI vice president Donald J. Brydon, and thirdly to arranger-conductor Torrie Zito. She has one child, a son, Allan, by her first marriage, who is also a singer, known professionally as Alan Merrill.
